Grand Hotel del Gianicolo: A Proper Pool Day Above Trastevere

Location: Gianicolo, Via delle Mura Gianicolensi, 107

2026 day pass: €35 Monday through Friday; €50 weekends and holidays

Hours: 9:00am to 7:00pm, seasonally May to September

This is one of the better hotel pools in Rome, and you do not have to stay at the hotel to use it. The pool is 20 meters long and about three meters deep, so you can actually swim in it instead of standing in a decorative puddle. There is a pool bar and restaurant, so you can arrive late morning, eat lunch, swim, read and stay until the afternoon heat has passed. Admission includes a lounger and umbrella. Swim caps are required, and the hotel can provide one.

Two things to know before you go:

First, loungers are first come, first served, and some are held for hotel guests. Arrive early if you want a full day, or around 3pm if you want a half day.

Second, the hotel is up on the Gianicolo hill above Trastevere which means, uphill. It is central, but a 40-minute uphill walk on an August afternoon is not the greatest idea. Take a taxi up, or the 115 bus from Piazza della Rovere to the Carini/S. Pancrazio stop, about 15 minutes. It will be easier to walk back down after your swim for aperitivo and dinner.

Best for: Couples, friends and anyone looking for a hotel-style pool day that still fits into a Rome itinerary.

Hotel Villa Pamphili Roma: A Large Pool Surrounded by Greenery

Location: Via della Nocetta, 105, near Villa Doria Pamphilj

2026 full-day price: €40 weekdays; €70 weekends

2026 afternoon price: €25 weekdays; €45 weekends, after 3:00pm

Hotel Villa Pamphili has a 25-meter outdoor pool surrounded by greenery, with loungers, a poolside bar and changing rooms. The setting feels more like a resort than a sports club. A standard 2026 day pass includes one sunbed, a towel and a bottle of water. An umbrella costs extra: €10 during the week or €15 on weekends. Packages for two are also available.

The hotel is not within walking distance of the center. Take a taxi. You can technically get there by public transport, but parts of Via della Nocetta have no sidewalks and are not pedestrian friendly. The afternoon pass is a good fit if you want to sightsee in the morning, have lunch, and spend the rest of the day at the pool.

Best for: People who want space, comfortable facilities and a full afternoon away from busy streets.

Rome Cavalieri, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel: A Luxury Pool Day

Location: Via Alberto Cadlolo, 101, Monte Mario

2026 day pass, Monday to Friday: €110 adults; €55 children aged 6 to 11

2026 day pass, weekends and holidays: €150 adults; €75 children aged 6 to 11

Includes: Outdoor pools, a towel and a sun lounger. Entry depends on availability, since numbers are capped for safety.

Pool bookings and questions: ROMHI.Fitness@waldorfastoria.com or +39 06 3509 2950

Rome Cavalieri sits above the city on Monte Mario, with landscaped grounds, outdoor swimming pools and views across Rome. Some spa facilities and extras cost more. There is also a separate children’s pool, so it can work for families who want a more luxurious day.

The price is high, especially for a family, but you are paying for the hotel and the luxury, not just a place to cool off. Plan it as a full day, not a quick dip between sights. Monte Mario is a neighborhood in the north of the city, outside the walkable historic center. A taxi is the most practical option, and if you are willing to spend €110 on a pool day, I doubt you’ll be taking the bus.

Best for: A luxury pool day, a special occasion or travelers who want a complete resort-style break.

Piscina delle Rose is the opposite of Rome Cavalieri. It’s an Olympic-size outdoor community pool in EUR, south of Trastevere, south of Garbatella, south of Ostiense, in a residential area where the people around you are mostly locals. Don’t expect a boutique hotel atmosphere. Expect Roman families, people swimming real laps, and a low admission price. If you want to spend an August day like a Roman would, come here. You can build a day around it: the Laghetto dell’EUR, the Basilica dei Santi Pietro e Paolo and the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana, better known as the Square Colosseum. It’s also walkable to Luneur Park, which makes it a great day out if you have kids with you.

Take Metro Line B to EUR Palasport. It’s one of the easiest pools on this list to reach without a taxi.

Small rooftop plunge pool with a waterfall feature and loungers at Aleph Rome Hotel near Via Veneto

Aleph Rome Hotel: A Small Rooftop Pool in the Center

Location: Via di San Basilio, 15, near Via Veneto and Piazza Barberini

2026 rates: €80 entry-only; from €60 for a half-day package

Pool hours: 10:00am to 6:00pm, May through September

The Aleph rooftop pool is central and beautiful, but very small. You can spend the morning sightseeing around Piazza Barberini, Via Veneto or the Spanish Steps and be on a rooftop without crossing the city.

The pool is about five meters by three and one meter deep. More than six people in it would feel crowded. It’s made to dip and sip for a while, not to spend the day swimming. Come here if you’re staying nearby, or if you’d rather sit on a lounger with a cocktail and look at the Roman skyline than cool down in a real pool.

The rooftop has a bar and food service, with packages that include food and drinks.

Best for: Couples and single travelers who want a convenient rooftop experience without leaving central Rome.

Happy Family Pool: A Family-Oriented Pool in North Rome

Location: Viale Cortina d'Ampezzo, 385, Roma Nord

2026 rates: €18 weekdays; €20 weekends for a full day

Happy Family is a fantastic pool if you’re in Rome with kids who need space to run around and a place to cool off. It’s a kids’ pool first. Adults lounge around, but don’t expect a quiet, relaxing afternoon. Kids rule the water here, and they have a blast.

The pool is about 16 by 8 meters and 1.5 meters deep the whole way across, with no shallow or deep end. Little ones who can’t swim need a floaty. A child who is 150 cm tall can just about keep their head above water. There is a lifeguard on weekends only.

You can order food to your lounger from the neighboring Cocomerino restaurant, and there’s a bar with ice cream, drinks, snacks and coffee. There’s a good mix of sun and shade, with loungers on both grass and concrete. The bathrooms and changing rooms are large and set up for families. Swim caps are required.

The pool is on Viale Cortina d’Ampezzo in northern Rome, well outside the central tourist neighborhoods. A taxi or car is the easiest way to get there, especially with kids. You can also take the 446 bus directly from Piazza Mancini in Flaminio. You can reserve by phone or just show up, but it gets very busy on hot days.

Best for: Families with younger children, or travelers staying in northern Rome.
